Before coming to medical school, I participated in a trip to Angola. I worked with Dr. Foster, a Canadian general surgeon. He currently works in an urban hospital in Lubango, and takes trips to outlying clinics and rural hospitals. I worked alongside Dr. Foster, Angolan physicians and nurses, and other medical students/visiting physicians. I worked with Dr. Foster for three months, and taught English for two months. In the words of: Megan McKown (Health Professions Student) - megan.mckown@utsouthwestern.edu
Working and learning at the Mt. Isa Base Hospital in Queensland Australia was an experience of a lifetime. There you get to experience not only medicine as we know it, but medicine for another culture and in a completely different setting. Because the area sees medical conditions and complaints we typically don't have in the US and because the hospital focuses on rural care, there is much to take in regarding treatments, and clinical decision making. The Mt. Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health prepare you for the cultural and medical experience prior to rotating and are very accommodating if you experience any problems while under their watch. The people are friendly, fun, welcoming and experienced in many facets of rural patient care. Its amazing to work with other students and doctors from Australia, South Africa, UK, New Zealand, and other various parts of the world. I cannot give the rotation a higher recommendation! It was better than anything I could have imagined and think everyone should experience and learn medicine in a setting outside of our comfort zone .... and Mt. Isa was exactly that!

I went to BIAPI's pediatric AIDS clinic on a community health rotation. Therefore, I spent a lot of my time with the community outreach teams. I traveled to rural locations with a nurse and social worker to provide community education and on-site HIV testing. We also visited patients' homes to see if they were having difficulties taking/storing their medications. Additionally, I was able to work with the doctors in the BIAPI clinic and at the national, government-run hospital, get involved with some of their research projects and attend lectures/grand rounds.

Formal attending rounds at 8 AM, then a full day in the OR watching whatever cases seemed most interesting and relevant. Scrubbed in for some, and just observed others. Also participated in their medical school curriculum, going to didactics with the Chinese med students, and animal surgery lab (where we did small bowel resections on animals). I was essentially a first year medical student on a third year general surgery wards rotation, but with the added flexibility of going to whatever cases were going on in the entire hospital, not just General Surgery. Beijing First Hospital is probably one of the country's pre-eminent hospitals since it's affiliated with Beijing University, so the technology was incredibly modern.

For this trip, you spend approximately 9days in Costa Rica. First day includes settling in for everyone. Second day involves multiple orientations on language skills, physical examination skills, disease processes and diagnosis, as well as various other important concepts. The next day is spent recruiting patients for the clinic. On days 4-7, we set up field clinics in rural areas around Alajuelita to see patients. You work in groups to see patients, and when you're done, the doctor comes and sees the patient again before she/he prescribes medication. The last whole day is a free day for whatever activity is included in the itinerary (for us it was beach and zip lining), and the last partial day is for packing up and leaving for the airport.

Worked with a group of approximately 15 students. Over the course of two weeks, we would typically spend 2/3 days working in morning/afternoon clinics that varied from downtown churches turned shelters, to the main meeting hall of remote rural villages. The other day we would spend travelling and sightseeing. We would be placed in groups where we would interview and perform physical exams on the patients, then we would present the patient to the attending physician, who would formulate a plan. The highlight of my trip was staying in a rural village of Nicaragua where myself and another student were guests of a local family's house. They would cook us meals and we would do our best to communicate with them while being guests in their house. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The sightseeing trips were amazing, as well. We ziplined through the forests, canoed, hiked and even visited a local Costa Rican night club. Great time.

Playa Dominical with the ISLS school is a great way to learn Spanish. It is difficult at first if you don't have any experience as the teachers do not know that much English, but it gets easier and forces you to learn a lot. If I could change something I would have stayed with a host family instead of the offered dorms. Overall very fun, and somewhat laid back.

Cachamsi offers a 4 week (can be altered) program in Riobamba, Ecuador that combines shadowing experience and medical Spanish classes. Mornings (~4 hrs) are spent in rotations of your choosing in one of the various hospitals in the city, or at rural clinics treating the indigenous population. These experiences can be hands-on or not depending on the doctor you are following and your own desires. After lunch, medical Spanish classes are held for 2 hours each afternoon in groups of 1-5 students. You can live with a host family or on your own. Weekends are free.

In the words of: Emberlynn Liu (Class of 2014) - emberlynn.liu@utsouthwestern.edu
This was a great program to improve your Spanish proficiency. You spend the mornings following a physician and the afternoon in a 2 hr Spanish class. You have the choice between different specialties and very different clinical sites: hospitals serving the indigent population (the General Hospital and the Children's Hospital), hospitals with a relatively more wealthy patient population (IESS and the Andino Hospital), and rural clinics (in the nearby indigenous population of Cacha). I had a 2 hour Spanish class each day that was taught by a linguist. The course was better than any Spanish class I have ever taken and was also geared toward the health care professional. The full immersion experience (living with a host family) also helped tremendously to improve my language skills. Plus, Ecuador is BEAUTIFUL. You do have to adjust to the climate some (elevation 9000 ft.) but all around you are breathtaking views of mountains and valleys.

The infrastructure is identical to that of any US medical institution with medical students, residents, attendings and proficient ancillary staff. Lectures are daily and teaching rounds are each tuesday. Overnight call is every 4th night with vast opporunity for emergency care experience and a wide range of tropical disease. I recommend this rotation very highly. You will walk away humbled with a new appreciation for core medicine void of lucrative access to technology.

This is a 10 day program with a Baptist-affiliated rural clinic in San Raimundo, Guatemala. The medical team was made up of physicians from the areas of pediatrics, surgery, Ob/Gyn, and psychiatry, but the exact personnel changes from year to year. It is an excellent opportunity to interview and interact with patients, scrub in for general and gynecological surgeries, and see health care delivered from intake to patients leaving with their prescriptions, all while learning about some of the beautiful cultures of Central America. If you do a good job, a patient might just bring you a fresh, homegrown pineapple as a thank you.

I participated in a program for people in between undergrad and health professional school. I learned Spanish, volunteered in an AIDS/TB hospital, taught health classes to a woman's group, and shadowed doctors in different clinical settings. It was a 6 month program in Guatemala that included lecture's about its history/immigration/health care. A typical week included spanish class, volunteering, attending lectures.

I worked alongside local physicians to set up free clinics in the capital city. We saw various types of patients, including those with parasites, infectious diarrheal disease, hypertension, malnutrition, vision problems, etc., and provided medications to them free of charge. On future trips, we hope to take more American medical professionals in order to better serve the community on a larger scale.

In the words of: Wesley Jackson (Class of 2012) - wesley.jackson@utsouthwestern.edu
As a group of 10 first and second year medical students, we worked in a medical clinic established by a Dallas-based non-profit called Sove Lavi in Pont Sonde, Haiti. We worked with two physicians from UT Southwestern and two physicians from Haiti. The students were given the opportunity to take a history of the patients with the help of a translator and completing a physical examination, while the physicians would assist the students in determining a diagnosis and treatment plan. On two days, we went to mobile clinics and treated patients in more rural areas.

10 students went to Haiti to work in Pont Sonde and surrounding rural areas for a week. We worked in the established clinic in Pont Sonde for 2 days seeing patients in the area and spent two days in rural mobile clinic locations seeing people with essentially no access to care. On another day, we took a field trip to nearby Albert Schweitzer hospital to learn from their programs. Peppered in our experience were trips to local town/village events to help us become more integrated in the culture.

The group was composed of a team of 15 students and two physicians from UTSW, joined by a Haitian physician and 5th year medical student (along with two translators). We spent a week seeing patients at a small clinic in Western Haiti - on the coastal plain - with a couple of days based in more rural areas outside the town. Facilities were basic: the clinic was staffed by a few nurses and had a small pharmacy, but treatment options were extremely limited.

Ede Jodi will soon be entering its fifth year of preparation for its annual medical relief trip to Pont Sonde, Haiti. Our partnership with Dallas based NGO Sove Lavi allows us to organize this amazing, wonderful, and extremely beneficial opportunity for a carefully selected group of MS1s and MS2s. The one week we spend in Haiti is always full to the brim with activity and hard work...this year, we treated almost 800 patients (adults and pediatrics), ran two mobile clinics, provided fluoride prophylaxis treatment to almost 400 children, organized a health workshop for women, and distributed close to a 100 nets around the community. Medical students benefit the most...from becoming proficient at history and the physical exam to experiencing a completely different world and culture, it is a life changing experience. We also always have the most dedicated, patient and brilliant faculty guiding us throughout. Ede Jodi's trip has gradually built a sustainable relationship with the community of Pont Sonde and we hope to continue to strengthen this in years to come.

Sove Lavi is an organization that serves to create sustainable projects in Haiti helping those in poverty. They have created many wells in the area giving clean water to the people, where as before the population would drink from trash filled rivers. Like this they provide many opportunities for Haitians in the issues of medicine, education, clothing, nutrition and lifestyle.

I worked at a small clinic in Ponte Sonde(3 hours north of Port au Prince), Haiti. Sunday was spent handing out mosquito nets and advertising the clinic. Monday - Thursday were spent working at the clinic seeing patients, with two of the days being mobile clinic days for half the group. The student would see the patient and present to the doctor. On Friday, we did fluoride treatment on kids under 11. We also conducted a women's health talk during the first half of the day. The second half was spent relaxing until our flight on Saturday.

In the words of: Jennifer Variste (Class of 2011) - Jennifer.Variste@utsouthwestern.edu
The first day we arrived was Sunday and we organized sleeping arrangements with the hotel. Monday, we saw patients in the clinic. The 10 students were split into teams with the 2 doctors (Dr. Esmaeil Porsa and Dr. Theresa Barton). There were two teams of 2 students each assigned to Dr. Porsa seeing adults downstairs and one team of 2 students each assigned to Dr. Barton seeing kids downstairs. 2 students were outside the clinic taking the vitals of people waiting in line. One student helped in the pharmacy and one student was the runner and communicated needs between the different teams, vitals and pharmacy. The week consisted of 2 days of clinic in Pont Sonde and then 2 days of mobile clinic in a nearby village. Students and doctors were split up the same way for mobile clinic as day clinic. We also took one day to sightsee and one day at the beach. It was a great experience.

St. Damien's Hospital is the only free pediatric hospital in Haiti. It is situated not far from the Port-au-Prince airport. It is part of "Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos," a Catholic-based NGO that runs orphanages around the world (including a larger orphanage outside of Port-au-Prince). It was damaged but not destroyed by the 2010 earthquake, and it took an important part in the earthquake relief (the staff buried about 20% of those who were buried in Port-au-Prince in the wake of the earthquake). I was deeply impressed with all the people I worked with, and I would go back there in a heartbeat. Whether they are still accepting short-term volunteers now or no, I could not say.

In the words of: Ankit Garg (Class of 9995) - ankit.garg@utsouthwestern.edu
The medical mission trip to Haiti is an excellent opportunity to learn about international medicine and how its philosophies are actually applied in field. During your one week stay, you will work out of a small clinic in Pon Sonde, treating local villagers and going out in the community to provide the locals with helpful items. Two days out of the week, you will go out into a remote village to provide a mobile clinic or go to the hospital in Saint Marc and see patients there. The hours and heat are intense with days running from morning to the evening seeing an enormous amount of patients. There is vast opportunity to hone your history taking and physical examination skills as most the time you will be working without the assistance of an attending physician until you are ready to present and discharge your patients. There is no language requirement, and vegetarian options are available as far as food is concerned. This is a great starting opportunity for anyone that wants to give international health a shot.

In the words of: Annette Li (Class of 2013) - annette.li@gmail.com
Spent a week in rural Honduras ministering and providing free health care to the people in the town. On my trip we visited a town BMDMI had never been to before, called Erandique. The people of the town flocked to the clinic from miles around to see us and were in real need for everything, from health care to food, to clothing, to medications, and most importantly for spiritual food. In three days, we served over 1000 people. A typical workday: Waking up around 7am to eat, have a short meeting, and devotional time. Then we headed out to help set up the medical clinic. I worked in triage, taking blood pressures, weights, and directing patients to doctors and where they were supposed to be. Spent a lot of my time w/ doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, optometrists. Also got to fill prescriptions in the pharmacy, checked out the eye clinic, dental clinic, and visited all the other ministries. They run multiple clinics w/ each trip: medical clinic, dental clinic, eye clinic, pharmacy, vet clinic, clothing ministry, food ministry, soccer ministry, children's ministry. We'd close shop by 5pm, have dinner, and then head over to an evening worship service. We'd end the night with a meeting/report and head to bed around 10pm. Days were very busy, and I was on my feet all day. You don't have to be a medical student to participate. Many non medical, non professional people went on the trip to just help out with anything that needed help. There is something for everyone to do. The organization BMDMI has been doing this for over 20 years and is very organized, knows what it's doing, and is an effective ministry. I went with a team of over 50 people from the US, and we were provided with interpreters while we worked in the clinic. You learn a lot- how to set up a clinic, what it takes to organize a trip like this, all the materials needed, etc. Also get to learn or practice your Spanish! It was a powerful experience for me, and I highly recommend it to anyone who's religious and desiring to find a way they can use their skills to learn how to serve others wholeheartedly.

In the words of: Patricia Beutler (Class of 2013) - Patricia.beutler@utsouthwestern.edu
The Roatan Health Assistance Organization was started in 2006 by Theresa Tran, who is (currently) a student at Baylor College of Medicine. I worked in a volunteer clinic on the island of Roatan, where 3/4 of the inhabitants live on less than a dollar a day. Their only access to health care is a hospital that does not even have running water. I worked at the free clinic- taking vitals and histories, distributing meds, doing health screenings, shadowing and assisting docs. Great opportunity (and my trip was fully funded by donations) but the organization will need more attention in order to survive now that many of the leaders are currently in school.

I worked on a rural mobile clinic team that visited 5 locations to provide basic primary care and screening. We mainly provided vitamins and anti-parasitics but also saw many patients who required referral to urban centers for further evaluation. We saw several hundred people each day between multiple doctors and residents. The medical students served as translators, worked the pharmacy and did triage. Our work day was from about 9-4 but at times we also had a several hour bus ride to reach the location.

In the words of: Thomas Heyne (Class of ) - thomas.heyne@utsouthwestern.edu
With this trips, I traveled near Trujillo, Honduras to help in a makeshift medical clinic in a town there. There were 2 pediatricians, 3 family medicine docs, and a geriatrics-focused NP. There was also an opthalmologist and his staff: mostly, he was giving out eyeglasses. There were also several nurses and translators. Our location was a Catholic seminary, which essentially closed down for the week so that we could do our medical mission: different rooms were used for exam rooms and for the pharmacy. Days started relatively early, and went relatively late, and we saw a good volume of patients. Mostly, the other medical student and I did some shadowing or helped participate in the H+P, or we worked in the pharmacy (e.g. if a patient had been written for a PPI and vitamins, we would go get these to give to the patient, and then give verbal and written instructions to the patient). Ability to speak Spanish was extremely helpful, but perhaps not absolutely necessary. It was a Catholic mission, so there was a short prayer in the morning and evening.

By shadowing a plastic surgeon at Hospital Escuela, I gained a greater appreciation for the challenges faced by doctors in developing countries. Overall, I feel that I now have a greater knowledge of medicine and of Honduran culture.

I was part of the pediatrics team at a 200 bed hospital in India. There were 2 pediatric attendings and 5 residents. A typical day started with breakfast in the guest house and then a short devotional before starting rounds. We would round in the NICU and PICU before going to the general pediatric wards. The NICU was a 6 bed room that was kept around 98 degrees fahrenheit so they wouldn't need a warmer. The PICU had about 8 beds and advanced life support such as ventilators. The pediatric wards were 2 large rooms with about 10 beds each. After rounds, we went to the clinic and saw patients. In the afternoon we would also have a short lesson on a chapter from Nelson's. On the weekends my husband (who was working with the surgery team) and I would travel around Bangalore and beyond to see more of India.

4 weeks of primarily observation on a surgery team in India; you generally arrive at 8am and round with the team; some attendings teach during rounds, but more often than not, they don't; you can then either go to the OR or clinic. Clinic consists of shadowing the residents and attendings, shadowing the nurses doing wound care, and watching endoscopies. As there are multiple Indian dialects spoken, language is a barrier.

In the words of: Sheby Alexander (Class of 2014) - shebyalexander@gmail.com
I shadowed in surgery, general medicine, and community health departments for 8 hrs/M-F & 4 hrs/Sa. My favorite experience, by far, was setting up mobile clinics at villages and slums around Bangalore with the community health department. English is a commonly spoken among hospital staff, but most patient interaction is in various Indian languages. It may be difficult to get translations, at times. This was a good way to learn about how medicine is practiced in another country.

In the words of: Suratha Elango (Class of 2010) - suratha.elango@gmail.com
TEWOAF hosts a number of programs catering to the poor fishing village community of Kadapakkam, which is about 2 hours south of Chennai and 1 hour north of Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu, India. The clinic was started over 10 years ago in response to a lack of health care provision in the area and serves a population of 26,000! The doctor regularly sees 40 patients over 4 hours each day. A mobile clinic, started in response to the 2004 tsunami, goes out to neighboring communities once a week. Tons of interesting cases can be seen and in general it's great to see how medicine is practiced in a resource-poor setting. Besides volunteering at the clinic, volunteers teach a spoken English class to a group of community children. This is a great way to get to know the community better. If you have interests outside of medicine, you can also help out with their other community projects including an e-education program where they teach different groups of community members computer skills through netbooks. And of course if you have any other interests, they'd be more than happy to start something new. As a volunteer your accommodations and meals are provided at the Uluru Children's Home which houses 36 children (some orphans, most who's families have abondoned them). The staff are incredibly nice and they all originate from the village. Overall the organization is doing a lot of good things in an admirable way. If you'd like more information check out their extensive website and please do get in touch with me if you are interested in going!

I also shadowed doctors in surgeries for hernias, gall bladder removal, C sections, and orthopedics. I also worked in another small school outside the city where I taught english and helped build a school garden.

You can choose four different areas to work in. I chose plastic surgery, urology, general surgery, and gynecology. You go to clinic during the week and you can be on call with the doctors if you choose to. I worked with nurses, residents and attendings. I would see my fellow students around at the hospital, but not too often. There was also a class component. I chose to enroll in two classes at the local medical school. It was interesting to see how things are done in another country.

Casa Hogar del Campesino is the only hospital in Cusco, Peru that serves the enormous indigent population in and around the city. The Sisters of Lumen Dei live in the convent above the hospital and run a massive philanthropic enterprise. Many of the nuns are highly trained professionals and included among them are primary care doctors, surgeons, nurses, and teachers. They manage a hospital that provides absolutely free medical care. They offer free consults, medication, and even surgery. They run two large schools and serve 5,000 meals a day. They even have a hospice center outside of the city where they offer 24-hour-care for terminally ill patients. They provide an incredible service to the Cusqueño population, and they do so with seemingly infinite generosity and compassion. Amazing.

International Service Learning: I spent two weeks in Lima, Peru volunteering with a mobile clinic that went to the poorest neighborhoods in Lima. In the words of: Julie Lin (Class of 2013) - julie.lin@utsouthwestern.edu
I volunteered with PAMS Mission Ayacucho - a U.S. based organization that brought together a team of doctors from different fields, medical students, and volunteers - to provide medical care for the people of Ayacucho. The small rural town is located in the mountains of eastern Peru. The organization was there for one week and took over the town's only hospital. Everyday, medical students were assigned to a different doctor, allowing us to experience fields like surgery, OB/GYN, cardiology, family medicine, pediatrics, etc. I was able to help in history taking and physical exams and was also able to scrub in on surgeries. The International Service Learning trip was two weeks long in Peru's capital city, Lima. There, we visited and set up clinics in some of Lima's poorest communities. The program was more geared towards family medicine. The students were in charge of history taking and doing parts of the physical exam and we presented our findings to the attending physician. The program organized days where we toured a local hospital, and we also had a suture clinic. We also had time to tour parts of the city and sight see on our days off. Doing both of these programs allowed me to experience both rural and urban Peru. Knowing Spanish is definitely a plus; it allowed me to have direct patient interaction and boosted my confidence in speaking Spanish. I would definitely recommend these programs for anyone who is interested in volunteering in Peru. It is a very worthwhile and rewarding experience!

I worked alongside 5 Univ Florida students in June, and 5 more in July (UF has an ongoing relationship with this site). We arrived at the small hospital (variably called Casa Hogar del Campesino, or Hospital San Adres) in Cusco every morning at 8:30. The hospital is run by nuns, three of whom are excellent physicians (the other physicians, especially the specialists, come in from the outside). We shadowed/did physical exam/helped in small procedures/helped in research until 3pm. The UF students were doing two longitudinal studies, so they interviewed patients in the morning. Approximately once a week, we went out into very rural areas.

While this trip is currently in the works, I have participated in numerous trips in the past with a similar group of people. I've travelled 3 times to Oaxaca, Mexico, and once previously to Calca, Peru. Generally, we travel over the weekend and get situated. Monday morning we begin to see patients (typically, very poor and indigent people) for pre-operative screening. Following patient exams, the cataract surgeries begin (using older techniques due to limiting technology at the clinics). The following morning we begin with post-op exams, then new pre-ops and surgeries. After a 5 day work week, we have had the ability to touch the lives of many patients who were previously severely impacted by their cataracts.

Alternated between an urban indigent hospital in Lima (Dos de Mayo) and a very poor makeshift clinic in Collique (1 1/2 hours north of Lima). At Dos de Mayo, I rounded with Peruvian infectious disease docs and observed surgeries. At clinic, as a pre-med student, I helped with triage, taking vitals, and running our makeshift pharmacy. As a med student, you'd have considerably more leeway to jump right in with the H&P, especially if you're a Spanish-speaker. We worked about 6-8 hours per day, then would return to our hotel in a nice part of Lima and enjoy the city. The service part of the trip lasted only one week.

The purpose of my project was to spend approximately three-four weeks volunteering and shadowing Dr. Yeh at the Shun-Tai Family Practice Clinic, located in Lu-Kang, Taiwan, a smaller town in central Taiwan. The purpose of my project was to observe differences in the health and health care systems of Taiwan. My main focus was to understand the National Health Insurance system (structure and sustainability) and to see how having accessibility to primary care affected the outcomes of disease in the population. I also had the opportunity to visit some larger hospitals in Taipei, where they served more of the underserved populations in clinics.

We spent two days in each location collecting public health information and statistics, and then hosted a clinic day during which we visited with patients under supervision of local doctors. At the conclusion of our trip, we had the opportunity to go on safari at two different locations and climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The SCF medical missions trip to El Paso was the perfect synthesis of caring for patients health and spirituality. The Southwestern Christian Fellowship Medical Mission Trip to El Paso, Texas, is a 1-week volunteer opportunity during spring break, in which a group of around 40 medical students are divided into 4 teams, each with a mentor physician. Every afternoon, each team is assigned to a different church where community members come for free health care check-ups. Students are assigned to work at the pharmacy, triage area, or do history and physical exams on the patients. The format is very similar to that of The Monday Clinic. In the mornings, students take part in group worship and group discussions with mentor physicians on a range of topics including the meaning of mission work and the importance of family. Participation in these activities is voluntary. There is also free time to explore the city. This event is open to all UTSW med students, irrespective of religious beliefs.

The UTSW medical mission trip to El Paso, TX is a trip designed for first and second year medical students to work in an underserved area and learn about healthcare disparities in America. This is truly an invaluable experience in which willing attendings who work as mentors teach students to take care of patients from lower socioeconomic levels. On this trip, students learn how to interact with patients who are non-US citizens and learn to understand how to think about and treat patients who have no means to pay for healthcare, many of which are sick with chronic illnesses.

Overall, a great experience in which I really got to practice my history and physical. I was able to get very comfortable with the process of taking vitals and asking questions. It was also a good opportunity to really observe the second years ask focused questions based on the information already gathered and do a focused physical (which there is little opportunity for during the 1st year in colleges). Lastly, it was a different experience talking to the patients in a relaxed setting - there were no stereotyped responses or answers given. Interacting with the physicians was also wonderful; they were eager to share their knowledge and experience with us.

The El Paso Spring Break mission trip with SCF provides an opportunity for medical and health professional students to practice their skills outside the classroom setting. Under the supervision of a licensed medical doctor, groups of students go to surrounding areas of El Paso and open clinic in a church. Some of the main focuses of care for the local people of El Paso include hypertension screening, and diabetes screening. The spring break medical mission trip provides an opportunity for students to practice their physical examination skills while providing care for the El Paso population.

Over Spring Break a group of forty medical students, doctors, and volunteers served strategic locations over the greater El Paso area. Each afternoon we split into teams of ten and traveled to various locations setting up impromptu clinics for the local population. Our service there mirrored the setup of Monday Clinic, with pairs of 2nd year and 1st year students serving walk-in patients and presenting/working with a doctor in charge of the entire team of ten. Patients served ranged over all ages and spoke both English and Spanish. Bilingual students were split amongst each team, so proficiency in Spanish was not required, however, any conversant knowledge helped. Teams also took donated medicine and supplies to be able to provide to each site as needed. In the mornings before lunch the entire group enjoyed worship and topical studies selected for each day. Though the studies and organization are Christian in nature this volunteer opportunity is open to members of all faiths and backgrounds.

In the words of: Caroline Nguyen (Class of 2014) - caroline.nguyen@utsouthwestern.edu
In the morning, we wake up around 8:00am and have breakfast. Then, we have devotional time at 9:00am in one large group. We usually listen to a speaker then as well. At 10:00am, we break up into small group and discuss passages from the bible or other philosophical text. We also discuss medical life. At 11:00am, we have lunch and we all drove to our sites at noon. Our group was broken up into 4 different groups of 10 students each. Each group had a physician who reviewed the patients seen for that day. From noon to about 7:00 or 8:00pm, we saw patients. We took vital signs and checked blood glucose levels on every patient who came through. And then a MS1 and MS2 would pair up and take the history from the patient and do a physical. Then, they would present their findings to the physician on hand and come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan. Dinner was usually sandwiches on site. When we got back to the church, we would have another devotional time and discuss what we saw that day. After that, it was free time to do whatever you wanted. A lot of soccer and basketball was played. There were days where we woke up early and went running or went to the park to fly kites.

I would completely recommend the mission trip with Southwestern Christian Fellowship. I made some great friendships on the trip and worked with some of the most inspiring physicians. I enjoyed the ability to help others here in my same state. We worked with some of the neediest people in Texas, and it gave me a new understanding and appreciation for the poor here in our same state. I enjoyed the ability to work with the Hispanic community. I enjoyed the ability to combine service with witnessing others about Christ at the same time. This is a medical mission trip to El Paso. We went in teams of 7-8 medical students and one doctor to different clinic sites (local churches) each day. After discussing the patient and possible treatment plans, we went into the room together and explained our assessment to the patient.

This was a 1 week long trip to El Paso, TX (which is located in the 3rd poorest county in the US). We set up clinics at churches throughout the city and saw ~20-50 patients at each site per day, with problems ranging from routine checkups to ear pain to osteoarthritis to gastritis. The students did the initial H&P and then presented to the accompanying physicians. We had a supply of drugs that we could give out, and also referred many patients to the low cost clinics in the city.

This opportunity, as I experienced it, was not foreign in the sense that a passport was required. It was certainly less exotic than one might expect, taking place in and around El Paso. It was foreign in that it exposed me to a different world of health care than that with which I had been familiar, in both the realms of medicine and of healing.

The SCF medical mission trip in El Paso was both a rewarding and eye opening experience. This trip was a refreshing break from the rigorous coursework of medical school and offered a tangible glimpse of the goal and purpose behind our studies, which is serving others. Through volunteering at the clinic I learned practical lessons in taking a patient history and performing a physical exam and gained insight into the role of community and culture in the practice of medicine.

SCF is a Christian organization that organizes an annual medical mission trip. Multiple clinic sites are set up daily and medical students are divided into teams to serve the medical needs of the underserved population. Each clinic site has 1 or 2 licensed physicians who volunteer their time to provide medical care with the students. The medical mission trip is a great opportunity to put into practice the knowledge gained through classes, gain experience and confidence with interviewing and examining patients, working alongside physicians and most importantly, helping the medically underserved in a multitude of ways.

The SCF mission trip is a yearly trip that takes place over spring break (usually there is a trip for MS1/2s and another trip for MS3/4s). Students see patients (with physician supervision) during the day and typically there is some kind of worship session at night. All students are welcome, but it is a Christian-based trip put on with the help of the Texas Baptist Convention and sharing the good news of Christianity as well as Christian worship sessions are large parts of the trip.

SCF Mission trip is an opportunity offered yearly to UTSW medical students. It is a good first time mission trip because everything is provided for you (i.e. food, transportation, housing), so you only need to come ready to participate. Each day we setup a new clinic in churches in and around El Paso, which gives each group a variety of people to treat. It is a great way to practice medical Spanish, as the majority of the people we see are Spanish speaking.

In the words of: Anisha Turner (Class of 2014) - anisha.turner@utsouthwestern.edu
The SCF Missions Trip was a life-changing experience. Not only were you able to help the under-served by providing them information about their health and general medications, you were also able to listen to them and share with them the greatest information of all - the love of Jesus Christ. It was amazing to see how simply providing open ears and welcoming arms was more touching to some patients than simply handing them the medications that they needed. A patient's spiritual life is very important to many people, and this service trip allowed me to realize and appreciate that fact even more.

Medical mission trip to Mexico or West/South Texas in border towns that are underserved. The population we interact with is very similar to that seen at Parkland during clerkships and have very similar problems such as diabetes, hypertension, endocrine problems, congenital and pediatric issues, acute care problems. Great experience and time to get to know classmates on a level beyond the classroom. Opportunity to interact with local physicians and faculty at UTSW.

I spent 4 weeks working at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City and had a blast. I worked in the ED along with 2 other medical students from the UK and saw diseases that I would rarely see in the US, like dengue fever and patients infected with fasciola hepatica. I spent most of my time shadowing since I had only just finished my first year of medical school but my mentor also tried to give me a more hands on experience by allowing me to suture lacerations, take blood, and put in IV lines. I sincerely enjoyed my experience in Vietnam and would recommend it to anyone.
